Bone Chaple Portugal// Alexander McQueen for Halloween

We’ve had a chance to visit a couple of cities in Portugal. But, in the Halloween spirit, I invite you to go to Evora and visit St. Francis Church where you will find the Capela dos Ossos, or Bone Chapel.I remember exactly my feeling standing in the middle of Bone Chapel, looking around the walls, columns, and ceiling which are covered in human bones and skulls. It was creepy and scary. I got goosebumps and held my husband’s hand for the whole time. I felt sick after that. Sad!!!!The chapel was constructed back on the 16th century by Franciscan monks who wanted to remind men of their own mortality. No one knows who the bones belong to- apparently they were dug up from a local cemetery which was already old when the monks got to it with their shovels. The bones of about 5,000 people were used to make up the chapel. The chapel is not too far from the main plaza of Evora. These pictures do not do justice to the creepy feeling that I felt.

Inside the chapel. The walls, columns, ceiling which are covered in human bones and skulls. Some bones fell off of the columns.
Are you ready for Halloween? It’s one of the biggest holidays in America. I’m neutral about thisholiday, but my kids are excited and they want to decorate for Halloween this time. They already know what their costumes are. How about you?

I've seen photos of that church before, but your photos are awesome. I love personal travel photos. They make the destination more "real", if that makes any sense. The church is interesting, yet totally creepy. And, I agree. McQueen is perfect for Halloween.

wow wow! the chapel is horribly amazing! :D

This year, for halloween, I should have been lady gaga (the past I'd beeen amy winehouse! :P ) but then, with my friends, we decided to make the spice girls so I abandoned the gaga's inspiration costume! the pitty thing is that at least, we really don't know what to wear :(

  7. Beautiful pictures!! Very unique design but I feel bad for those people whose skulls and bones are still there after super long time since their death.. On a lighter note, thanks again Hanh for posting one-of-a-kind travel pics! If it weren't for your blog, I wouldn't even know these places exist..=)

  9. I'm amazed of what sometimes clerics think to send a message. Interesting to see it though.
Unfortunately in my country there isn't Halloween, but I could definitely use all these great accessories, especially the clutch!!
    Happy Halloween!

Wow that is so creepy! I instantly got chills when I saw the picture of the skulls lining the ceiling. I agree that this is a must see around this holiday, but I don't think I'll be seeing it. Pictures are enough for me- so creepy! Love that clutch!

  14. This reminds me of when "Bodies" Exhibition was in town, and I happened to be in the car w/ my dad, and I was like "Oh I really want to go!" And he flipped out on me about it.
When it comes to skulls and stuff, My 1st knee jerk is to think ooohh cool!!! but then when I stop & think: this chapel makes me sad & confused that a place of worship is made out of bones and skulls.
That said I do like skulls, the decorative kind, but they're not something I'd ever own, so I have to admire them from afar.

    excellent post.

i've always (yes, even as a child) been ambivalent about halloween, too. but everyone else in my family gets excited about it every year, and it's rather infectious at times.

i HAVE to share this post from yesterday, from Stephanie at Grey blog, "capuchin cripta di roma": http://sbarnscher.blogspot.com/2009/10/capuchin-cripta-di-roma.html

    fascinating stuff, huh?!

Great post referencing the church w/ McQueen… that costume would be very difficult to make! I initially wanted to do a look from McQueen's F/W show but I don't think most people would know what I am… so then I just decided to be Lady Gaga… which, as we know, everybody is going to be for Halloween… :(
